English is in use for over 100 countries and each country will pronounce English some differently from others. It means that American English will have some differences in pronunciation from British English or English of other countries as  the second language.

It also means that if you learn the method to pronounce English in your country, your English accent will be a little different from American accent or British accent.

If you want to learn American English accent, you must know these differences and then apply them in speaking. In my viewpoint, English with American accent is the best and the most attractive to listeners and it’s also easier to pronounce than English with other accents.

If you want to learn how to pronounce English with American accent, this lesson is for you.

Rules for American English Pronunciation:

1/ Rule 1: wanna     vs    want to

International English: I want to go shopping

American English: I wanna go shopping

“wanna” is American style. If you speak 2 sentences above, you’ll see that “wanna” will be more natural and fluently to pronounce that “want to”

Other words with this rule:

Go to     =    gonna

Got to =   gotta

2/ Rule 2: “t”      vs    “d”

Example: International English              American English

            Pretty   /priti/                                 Pretty  /pridi/

pridi” is American style. If you speak 2 words above, you’ll see that “pridi” will be more natural and fluently to pronounce that “priti

The consonant “t” will be pronounced “d” in American English, but the syllable “t” is still pronounced “t” in British or International English.

If you see an English word with the syllable “t” such as “water”, you must pronounce it  /’wɔ:/ instead of / ‘wɔ:/

            Other words with this rule:

Better                          /’be/

Matter                       /’mæ/ …

3/ Rule 3: “ə”

Example: International English              American English

                   Beautiful /’bju:tiful/               beautiful /’bju:dəfəl/

The syllable “ə” is American style, American English often use it in speaking instead of “i” because it’s easier to pronounce that “i

Other words with this rule:

International English                     American English

Wonderful   /’wʌndəful/           wonderful  /’wʌndəfəl/

Responsibility  /ris’pɔnsəbiliti/           responsibility /ris’pɔnsəbiləti/

4/ Rule 4: “o”   vs “oa”

Example: International English              American English

got     /got/                           got      /goat/

“goat” is American style, it’s like you must pronounce two syllable “go at” at the same time.

Other words with this rule:

Hot                 /hoat/

Not                 /noat/

5/ Rule 5: “r”

Example: International English                          American English

hard               /ha:d/                                   hard   /hard/

/hard/ is American style, it’s pronounced the same way you spell it, /ha:d/ is pronounced without “r” in it. ( “:” means you prolong the word you pronounce)

Other words with this rule:

car                  /kar/

card                /kard/

RULE 90:

Rule 90 means you must spend 90 hours on practicing communicating English with others if you want to speak English by American accent in any situation naturally and fluently.

If you really want to speak English with American accent naturally and fluently, there is no way else than communicating English with others at least 90 hours. Look at the method you learn English, do you spend enough 90 hours on speaking English with others? If not, surely you can’t speak English naturally and fluently.

Look at the method you learn English:

Are you a positive person who tries to make a conversation more interesting, meaningful

Are you a negative person who just listens to others and never gives any question or tries to make the conversation more interesting?

If you’re the second one, you never speak English naturally and fluently no matter how long you spend on learning English.

How to practice English with others?

You must find a friend to learn English with. You can find any friend to learn English with. It’s not true that you must practice English with native English speakers to speak English well.

For example, I’m a Vietnamese people and I’m very shy and I don’t have many chances to speak English with foreigners, so I chose to speak English with my friends and now I can speak English with American accent perfectly.

The thing you should do is to find someone to practice speaking English with and then, spend 90 hours on practicing speaking English. If you can do that, no matter who you choose to learn English with, you’ll speak English with American accent perfectly.

This lesson will show you how English language was established and how to pronounce a word in English in standard. If you don’t know how English language was established, how can you pronounce it in standard? it’s almost impossible

There are 3 rules of this lesson:

Rule 1: Rule “Character connection” will show you how to pronounce a word in English.

Example: a word in English is pronounce by connect single characters together.

    b      +      e         =       be

Rule 3:  Pause in English Speaking:

In English speaking, we must split a long sentence into shorter phrases to speak.

Example: I’m a student, so I must go to school everyday.

This is a long sentence and basically, you can’t remember all words clearly and sometimes you don’t have enough breath to speak a long sentence, so it’s split into shorter phrases to speak out:

    I’m a student,/ so / I must go to school everyday.

a/ Why choose an English song to learn Pronunciation?

By learning to sing an English song, you’ll learn 3 principles “accent, character connection, word connection ” at the same time without thinking. After two weeks of practice, you’ll discover that your pronunciation is more standard, because then, these 3principles are connected together and connected to the song to help you pronounce English in standard automatically.

Music is also one of the tools to show how a language is pronounced. When you learn to sing an English song, it also means you’re learning to pronounce English in standard.

If you can sing an English song fluently, it also means you can pronounce English in standard. And the last problem to fully master English speaking is to use your standard pronunciation in communicating English with other English learners.

b/ Which song is suitable for pronunciation?

You can choose any English song as long as you can sing it. The problem is not in how famous the song is, it’s in how simple the song is for practicing Pronunciation.

I’m an English teacher but I almost can’t sing most of English songs perfectly because the tone is so high or the speed is so fast.

If you want to pronounce English in standard quickly and easily, I propose you learn to sing the song “Seasons in the sun”. This is the most suitable song that I chose from hundreds of other English ones.

      c/ Method:

      Follow 2 steps below:

1/ Watch this video clip with lyrics 1 time

2/ Practice pronunciation by singing the song in this video clip 2 times

If you can sing this song perfectly, you also have the perfect pronunciation.  Spend 2 weeks on learning to sing this song and your pronunciation will be perfect as you wish.

This is the simplest method to be perfect in pronunciation. Don’t be lazy, because then you never speak English naturally and fluently no matter how simple this method is.

You can also practice pronunciation by the following songs:

      Only love – Trade Mark

I lay my love on you – Westlife

Yesterday once more – The Carpenters

This is me – Demi Lovatto

Example: Someone asks you “What’s your name?” and if your name is Dave, then you’ll answer “My name is Dave” without thinking.

The reason you can answer this question without thinking is because “My name is Dave” was in your mind and you only open your mouth to speak it out. It’s like natural response without thinking.

        Here is the explanation:

When someone asks you an English question, the process to answer will be:

Step 1: Listen to English question clearly.

Step 2: Translate this question into your native language for understanding.

Step 3: Find a suitable answer in your native language.

Step 4: Translate this answer into English.

Step 5: Speak out this answer in English clearly and fluently.

What happens if you can’t hear this question clearly or you don’t have a suitable answer for it?Surely, you can’t give an answer easily and fluently.

But why don’t you encounter these five problems with the example above? It’s because the answer has already existed in your mind and your mind was handling five steps quickly and automatically to give the answer “My name is Dave” for the question “What’s your name?“.

How can you do that? By learning the method “Respond English naturally” to ask questions and give answers in English automatically.

The method “Respond English naturally” has the following steps:

Repeat asking common questions and giving common answers

Repeat asking common questions and giving common answers

Repeat asking common questions and giving common answers

The core of this method is in the word repeat. It’s also the method that children learn a language repeat and repeat, if you repeat asking a question or giving an answer in English many times, you’ll ask this question or give the answer in English naturally and automatically without thinking.

        How to practice this method?

In English, there is the rule name “Rule Q-A”:

        Rule Q-A = Question – Answer

No matter what you talk about or who you talk with, when you talk something, it means you’re asking a question or giving an answer. Speaking English with someone also means asking questions or giving answers in English with him/her.

Learning English Speaking = learning to ask question or give answer

        Example:

        Me:     Hi! How are you?

        John: I’m fine!

        Me:     What’s your name?

        John: I’m John

Me:     Where are you from, John?

        John: I’m from Singapore

        ………………………

In this situation, John and I speak English together and we use Rule Q – A by asking questions and giving answers.

The followings are 101 common questions in English, just by repeating asking and answering these common questions, many of my students can speak English naturally and fluently within only 2 weeks of practice.

If you use this method, you also have the same result as my students. If you use this method, you have a chance to speak English naturally and fluently and if you don’t use it, nothing happens! All is your choice!

Exercise Personal: Practice Pronunciation and response (1 week)

Print out these 101 common English questions.

Use a pen to answer these questions by your own information.

Use a pen to underline two words connected together such as “What is it?” or “Where do you work?”.

Speak 101 questions (including answers) with normal speed method as above.

If you speak these 101 questions and answers with the speaking speed from 5 minutes 40 seconds to 6 minutes 40 seconds, it means that your speed is standard. Use a watch to see if you speak English at standard speed. Standard speed is 6 minutes 10 seconds and the difference of +/- 30 seconds is acceptable.

If your speed is longer than 6 minutes 40 seconds, you will cause boredom to listeners. Speed up your speaking.

If your speed is shorter than 5 minutes 40 seconds, it means you speak so fast, then your pronunciation is so short and unclear, it makes listeners hard to understand. Speed down your speaking.

          1.  Rule “character connection”

          • How to pronounce a word in English:

          Example: b      +      e      =      be

Pronounce “b” fast and then pronounce “e”. You’ll hear that “b” and “e” are connected together to become one syllable “be

          Example: p      +      e      +      n      =      pen

Pronounce “p” fast, then pronounce “e” fast, and then pronounce “n”. You’ll hear that “p”, “e” and “n” are connected together to become one syllable “pen”.

Rule: “Pronounce a word in English = pronounce all characters in the word”

          • Pronounce English in slow way and pronounce English in fast way:

In English, a word pronouced in slow way is different from this word pronounced in fast way.

          Example:   cake   =    c       a     ke

          Phonetic        k     ei      k

If you pronounce this word in slow way, you’ll hear it like:

          Cake  =   k  + ei  + k     =  kei k

Otherwise, if you pronounce this word in fast way, you’ll hear it like:

          Cake  =  k   +   ei+k   =    ket k

The reason for this difference is the connection of characters in the word. You haven’t yet finished pronouncing this character “ca” and you must pronounce the next one “ke”, it’ll make two characters connected together and you’ll hear the difference between slow way and fast way.

          Example: – late   =    l  a  te

          Slow way     l  ei  t  =  lei t

          Fast way      ei + t  =  let t

It’s also a major reason that you’ve learned English for a really long time without any improvement:

Learn vocabulary through single words and they’re pronounced in a slow way

Words are pronounced in a complete sentence in a fast way in speaking and Listening

How to pronounce English in standard:

Learn vocabulary through a complete sentence in a fast way

          2.  Rule “word connection”:

In an English sentence, if the end of the word is a consonant and the next word begins with a vowel, these two words will be connected together when you pronounce.

                      Example:     I     like it!

          3.  Pause in English Speaking:

In English speaking, we must split a long sentence into shorter phrases to speak.

Example: I’m a student, so I must go to school everyday.

This is a long sentence and basically, you can’t remember all words clearly and sometimes you don’t have enough breath to speak a long sentence, so it’s split into shorter phrases to speak out:

          I’m a student,/ so / I must go to school everyday.

          Reasons for making a pause:

Even native English speakers also make a pause in a long sentence to help it smoother and easier to understand. If you don’t make a pause, your sentence is long and not everyone can understand what you mean.

Making a pause in sentence is a must-to-do thing in English speaking. When you make a pause, you have more time to think out next words or next ideas to talk, then you make your conversation smoother and more interesting.

          Summary:

You’ll never pronounce English in standard, if you can’t use these rules in speaking. But how can we use these rules in lessons?

By learning to sing an English song, you’ll have a standard accent. Then, use your standard accent to speak English with other English learners within 2 weeks and you’ll speak English naturally and fluently as you wish.
