Preposition + Place:

            “Preposition + place” to express where an action happens in a sentence.

Ex: – Dave lives in Paris.

–       Dave is standing behind the door.

Rule for “Prepositions + Places”:

  • at + point of place

at the bus stop , at the door

at the end of the street

 

  • in + an enclosed space

in my pocket , in a box

in Paris, in U.S

 

  • on + a surface

on the table , on the floor

on the street

 

  • under + a surface

under the table

under the water surface

 

  • behind + a place

behind the door

behind you

 

  • beside + a place

beside the door

beside you

 

 

 Some prepositions + places don’t follow the rule above:

at home                                 at school                   at work

at university                           at college                  at the top/bottom

in a car                                  in a taxi                     in a boat

in the newspaper                    in the sky                  in an elevator

on a bus                               on a taxi                   on a plane

on a ship                               on a motorbike       on a horse

on the way                            on the radio             on television

 

Means of transportation: “by”

by bus                                    by taxi                       by plane

by motorbike                          on foot …

 

Specific situations:

go home                                go picnic                   go to school

leave a place for another place

go to + a place
