Some specific situations:

1. Stop

To V: stop this thing to do another thing

Ving: stop your current work

Ex: – I’m playing football. Then, I stop to go home for dinner.

–       I stop playing football because I’m so tired.

 

2. remember

to V0:  remember something in the future

Ving: remember something in the past

Ex: – Please, remember to send this letter to Nam tomorrow.

–       Do you  remember sending this letter to Nam?

 

3. forget

to V0: forget something in the future

Ving: forget something in the past

Ex: – Please, don’t forget to do your homework. (do homework in the future)

–       I forget doing my homework. (do homework in the past)

 

4. Try

to V0: do something by working hard

Ving: do something by testing it

Ex: – I try to get a good result. ( I learn hard to get a good result)

–       I try doing this exercise. (I test my ability by doing this exercise)

 

5. regret

to V0: regret something in the future

Ving: regret something in the past

Ex: – I believe you regret to travel alone for the trip next Sunday.

–       I regret  traveling  alone because I was so lonely on my trip to the beach last Sunday.

 

6. like

would like + to + Vo : want something

like + Ving: love something

Ex: – I would like to eat apple = I want to eat apple.

–       I like eating apple = I love eating apple.

7. Begin, start, continue, like, love,        +                      have the same meaning
prefer, hate, can’t bear, can’t stand                   Ving

Ex: – I begin to learn English for my future job.

–       I begin learning English for my future job.

8. See, hear, feel, smell, listen,          +                              have the same meaning

notice, watch, look at, observe                          Ving

Ex: – I saw you go to the supermarket yesterday.

– I saw you going to the supermarket yesterday.

 

9. It + be + Adj/N + (for me) + to V

Ex: It’s difficult for me to complete all exercises.

 

10. S + V + how/what/why/where/when/who + to V

Ex: I don’t know where to go at the weekend.
