2 types of Article in English:

Indefine Article:  a, an

Definite Article:  the

 

Indefinite Article: a, an + Nsingular

an + Nsingular (a, e, o, u, i)              I have an apple.

a + Nsingular (the rest)                      My father will buy me a new bike.

“a,an” to show a general thing, person but we don’t really know where it is or how it looks

Ex: Do you want to go to a new supermarket with me?

(In this situation, your friend doesn’t know where a new supermarket is or how it looks)

Use “a, an” for a job

Ex: I’m a doctor.

–     He is an English teacher.

 

 

Definite Article: The + N

To define a thing, a person that everyone know where it is, how it looks …

Ex:Do you want to go to the supermarket with me?

(In this situation, both you and your friend have already known this supermarket, and know where it is and how it looks)

Use “the” before the name of:

Sea                        The Pacific Sea

River                    The Amazon River

Restaurant         The Buxton Hotel

Theatre                The Sydney Theater

Museum …         The National Museum

 

 

Use “a” to show a thing, a person for the first time, then use “the” for the next time.

Ex: I saw a man yesterday. The man was running away from police.

(“man” appears for the first time, use “a”)

Use “the” for the unique thing The sun, the earth, the moon, …

(there are only one sun, one earth, one moon … all over the world)

Situations don’t use “a, an” or “the”

If N plural or N uncount is a general thing or a general people not definite

1. I like Hollywood movies.

(There are many Hollywood movies and we don’t know the name of the definite movie).

2. I like coffee.

(There are many kinds of coffee and whe don’t know what kind of coffee we like)

Before the name of

Airport                Washington Airport, New Dehli Airport, …

Street                   Berveley Street, St Paul Street, …

Language           English, French, …

Meal                     Breakfast, lunch, …

Country             France, Vietnam, …

Specific situations: The U.S, The U.K

Means of transportation
