  • Understand an English sentence:

Rule 1:  In English, we understand a sentence as follows:

Example: I      eat     apple.

Rule 2: Number +Adj + N

–   Rule 2 – 1: Adj + N

Ex:   green apple

Adj       N

2            1

Rule 2 – 2 : Number + Adj + Noun

Ex:   two    green   apples

1           3            2


Example:     I     eats      two   green  apples    everyday.

Pronoun    V      number Adj     N        N

Position:        1        2        3           5        4                6

 

  • Understand W-H question:

Example:     John       eats      apple

Position:      1        2     3

what = apple

What      does        John      eat?

W-H     Vauxilary     S            V

Position:     3                       1            2

“what” replaces “apple” at the position “3”.

Vmodal “does” has no meaning, we don’t number it.

Example:       John     eats     apple.

Position:           1        2     3

who = “John”

Who         eats        apple?

Position:          1               2               3

 

Exercise 1: Number the words in the following sentences

1)         I     love     you

Position:

2)        I     read     interesting    book

Position:

3)       I     read     an     interesting     book

Position:

4)        I     want     you     to     read    an    interesting     book

Position:

Notice: we don’t number for “to”

 

Solution:

1)           I     love     you

3)         I     read     an     interesting     book

4)        I     want     you     to     read    an    interesting     book
