S    +   was/were

The Simple Past is used to express an action to happen in the past.

 

Time word for The Simple Past:

Yesterday

Ago + past time

Ex:      2 days ago                3 weeks ago           5 years ago

Last + past time for 1 unit

Ex:      last week = 1 week ago

In, on + day, month, summer, year … in the past

Ex:      in 2006                      on Monday

 

1/ Vmain         :   S   +   Vmain2,ed

Ssingular /Splural + Vmain2,ed no “s,es”

Ex: He went to school yesterday.

–      We went to school yesterday.

2/ Vmodal         :   S   +   Vmodal2    +    Vmaino

Ssingular / Splural + Vmodal2 no “s,es”

Common Vmodal in English:

Vo                                V1s,es                           V2

Can                             can                             could

Will                            will                             would

May                            may                            might

Should                       should                       should

Ex:  He should go to school yesterday.

–       He could go to school yesterday.

3/ Be :   S    +   was/were

Ssingular + was                      He was at home yesterday.

Splural + were                        We were at home yesterday.

S = “I”  + “was”                     I was at home yesterday.

S = “You” + “were”            You were at home yesterday.

 

In English, each Verb is in one of two following groups:

Vregular             and                 Virregular

Vregular : V established with “ed” for past tense.

Virregular:  V not established with “ed” for past tense.

Example:                  Vregular                         Virregular

Vo                    play                            go

V1                 play, plays                go, goes

V2                   played                       went

In English, each Verb (Vo, V1, V2) is used for different tenses:

Vo is called Vinfinitive used for Future tenses.

V1 is called Vpresent used for Present tenses.

V2 is called Vpast used for Past tensed.

Example:

–             The Simple Future:      S + will + Vmaino

I will go to school tomorrow.

John will go to school tomorrow.

–        The Simple Present:    S  +  Vs,es   ( or S + V1s,es)

I go to school everyday.

John goes to school everyday.

–        The Simple Past:           S  +  V2ed

I went to school yesterday.

John went to school yesterday.

“Go” is Virregular at V2 = “went”
