 Subject and Verb in English: S + V

3 groups of S

S singular: he, she, it, Nsingular

S plural:  we, they,  Nplural

S special:    I ,  you

3 types of V

Vmain go, drink, eat, look, kiss, …

Vmodal “can, will, should, may, must … ”

V = be, do, have

Vmain is a verb to cause action in a sentence. The sentence has no meaning without Vmain

Vmodal is a verb to supplement the meaning for Vmain. The sentence still has meaning without Vmodal

V= be, do, have is Vmain or Vmodal depending on its function in a sentence

Ex: I eat 2 apples everyday. (Vmain = eat, without “eat”, we don’t understand this sentence)

–    I can eat 2 apples everyday. (Vmodal = can, without “can’, we still understand this sentence)

–    I am a student. (Vmain = am, without “am”, we don’t understand this sentence)

–    I am eating apple now. (Vmodal = am, without “am”, we still understand this sentence)

 

Rule between S and V:

Ssingular +   Vsingular

Splural      +   Vplural

1/ S + Vmain

Ssingular + Vmain sngular (s,es)        John eats apple everyday

Splural + Vmain plural                             We eat apple everyday

S = “I” or “you” + Vmain plural           I eat apple everday

2/ S + Vmodal

Ssingular + Vmodal                    John can eat apple everday

Splural + Vmodal                          We can eat apple everyday

S= “I” or “you” + Vmodal         I can eat apple everyday

3/ S + Vauxiliary

Ssingular + Vsingular auxiliary       John doesn’t eat apple everday

Splural + Vplural auxiliary                We don’t eat apple everyday

S= “I” or “you” + Vplural auxi         I don’t eat apple everyday

4/ S + be(am, is, are)

Ssingular + besingular = is          John is a student

Splural + beplural = are                We are students

S = “I” + be = am                            I am a student

S = “you” + be = are                     You are a student
