English is in use for over 100 countries and each country will pronounce English some differently from others. It means that American English will have some differences in pronunciation from British English or English of other countries as  the second language.

It also means that if you learn the method to pronounce English in your country, your English accent will be a little different from American accent or British accent.

If you want to learn American English accent, you must know these differences and then apply them in speaking. In my viewpoint, English with American accent is the best and the most attractive to listeners and it’s also easier to pronounce than English with other accents.

If you want to learn how to pronounce English with American accent, this lesson is for you.

Rules for American English Pronunciation:

1/ Rule 1: wanna     vs    want to

International English: I want to go shopping

American English: I wanna go shopping

“wanna” is American style. If you speak 2 sentences above, you’ll see that “wanna” will be more natural and fluently to pronounce that “want to”

Other words with this rule:

Go to     =    gonna

Got to =   gotta

2/ Rule 2: “t”      vs    “d”

Example: International English              American English

            Pretty   /priti/                                 Pretty  /pridi/

pridi” is American style. If you speak 2 words above, you’ll see that “pridi” will be more natural and fluently to pronounce that “priti

The consonant “t” will be pronounced “d” in American English, but the syllable “t” is still pronounced “t” in British or International English.

If you see an English word with the syllable “t” such as “water”, you must pronounce it  /’wɔ:/ instead of / ‘wɔ:/

            Other words with this rule:

Better                          /’be/

Matter                       /’mæ/ …

3/ Rule 3: “ə”

Example: International English              American English

                   Beautiful /’bju:tiful/               beautiful /’bju:dəfəl/

The syllable “ə” is American style, American English often use it in speaking instead of “i” because it’s easier to pronounce that “i

Other words with this rule:

International English                     American English

Wonderful   /’wʌndəful/           wonderful  /’wʌndəfəl/

Responsibility  /ris’pɔnsəbiliti/           responsibility /ris’pɔnsəbiləti/

4/ Rule 4: “o”   vs “oa”

Example: International English              American English

got     /got/                           got      /goat/

“goat” is American style, it’s like you must pronounce two syllable “go at” at the same time.

Other words with this rule:

Hot                 /hoat/

Not                 /noat/

5/ Rule 5: “r”

Example: International English                          American English

hard               /ha:d/                                   hard   /hard/

/hard/ is American style, it’s pronounced the same way you spell it, /ha:d/ is pronounced without “r” in it. ( “:” means you prolong the word you pronounce)

Other words with this rule:

car                  /kar/

card                /kard/

RULE 90:

Rule 90 means you must spend 90 hours on practicing communicating English with others if you want to speak English by American accent in any situation naturally and fluently.

Are you a negative person who just listens to others and never gives any question or tries to make the conversation more interesting?

If you’re the second one, you never speak English naturally and fluently no matter how long you spend on learning English.

How to practice English with others?

You must find a friend to learn English with. You can find any friend to learn English with. It’s not true that you must practice English with native English speakers to speak English well.
